The basic concept behind HBOT is to provide treatment of medical conditions through the use of higher oxygen concentration levels that are achieved within a multi-place chamber. Higher oxygen levels than can be provided by breathing normal air or 100% oxygen via a mask system.

Hyperbaric treatment by the use of multi place recompression chambers was, in the past, used mainly to treat pressure related ailments. In fact the main function of the multi place hyperbaric chamber, located at Phuket International Hospital, is to treat divers for air embolism and decompression sickness. However, there have been in recent times significant advances in the use of hyperbaric oxygen to treat a variety of conditions, under the classification of HBOT, hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
