Deviated nasal septum and nasal obstruction
Nasal structural abnormalities
The most common abnormalities are deformities of the external nose and deviated nasal septum. Nasal deformities are typically caused by trauma and injury or are congenital (occurred since birth). The indications for surgical correction are nasal obstruction or for aesthetic purposes.
Deviated nasal septum
The nasal septum is the thin, flat cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two sides. Ideally the nasal septum should be in the midline, separating the nose into left and right sides. But in fact, about 80% of people have a nasal septum that is not in the midline. A deviated septum will be a problem when it is severely shifted to one side of the nose and causes difficulty breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, chronic nasal congestion, repeated sinus infections, recurrent nosebleeds or sinus headaches and facial pain. Septoplasty, a surgical procedure to correct the deviated septum, is indicated if you have the aforementioned symptoms.
